Kleine Scheidegg

Brienz

Today is our trip to the mountains. As we passed through many long tunnels, one almost 3 miles long. Switzerland is 70% mountainous and has over 1300 car tunnels. Our first stop was Brienz, famous for its wood carvings. We walked up through some side streets with typical frame houses with colorful flowers planted on the balconies and down to the lakeside.

Hang Gliders in Interlaken

In Interlaken we stopped for hot chocolate and watched the hang gliders launch high on the cliff above the town and land in the park.

Train up to Kleine Scheidegg

Then we caught a cog train and climbed up the mountain side to Kleine Scheidegg at 7000 feet. As we climbed, we had beautiful views of the villages and several waterfalls. From the train station we could see several glaciers on the face of Mount Eiger. The train to Jungfrau leaves from here and climbs through tunnels up to 11000 feet. I've done that train on a previous trip. From the Top of Europe, the glaciers stretch out for miles. We had a Swiss lunch of Veal, roast potatoes and cabbage. As we finished lunch the sun came out allowing for beautiful pictures. We descended the other side of the pass to Grindelwald on the cog train, where we boarded the bus to head home.
